Welcome to Week 3! It really was a pleasure to see the Year 6 leaders presented with their badges on Tuesday. I have been thrilled with the behaviour of all the students and also of the way the Year 6 students have been modelling the way we Care for Ourselves, Others and The Environment.

Playground Upgrade
Currently we have an issue with our timber play structure rotting as well as the current drainage and playground topography resulting in surface water running across the ground and removing essential softfall. Along with this there are a number of rotting timber retaining walls that require repair.
In 2022 our P&C successfully applied for a gambling community benefit grant and obtained $100 000. In 2022 we also obtained an arborists’ report to inform potential contractors of the areas that would need to be protected around the trees in the playground area.
We have recently had an audit of our playground and the recommendation is to remove THE timber playground and repair retaining walls, as well as the other 3 play structures. This work will be prioritised with other Education Queensland projects, quotes will be sought and Education Queensland will determine if it can be completed this financial year. If this occurs the school will contribute $30 000 and the combined $130 000 will be used to construct a replacement playground in place of the current wooden playground.
I have also applied for a School Subsidy Scheme (SSS) grant. This is an EQ grant that matches school funding and depending on the size of the school will contribute more. In order to proceed with this a quote for earthworks, drainage and playground replacement was required. A number of contractors were contacted and came to inspect the site but were unwilling to give a quote within the time frame that was required. Building Asset services (BAS ) gave an indicative quote of $571 000 (ex GST) plus an additional 10% contingency.
In order to apply for funds to cover this the school was required to commit to contribute $165 000 which means if successful the school will be required to contribute an additional $35 000 on top of the $100 000 grant and the $30 000 allocated in the 2023 budget. Whilst there are future provisions in the school budget that can be used, it is my preference that fundraising be used to contribute to this amount as much as possible. The outcome of the SSS grant application will not be known until June.
If the SSS Grant application is unsuccessful, we will only replace the timber playground, if the SSS grant is successful we will proceed with the rejuvenation of the entire playground area.
Due to the significant amount of money involved, I would like to form a steering committee composed of interested parents or community members to assist in the planning of this exciting project to ensure the end result is fit for purpose and value for money. If you would be interested in joining this committee please let me know.
Assembly
We are trialling holding fortnightly assembly on a Tuesday so that our concert band students can perform on a regular basis. Our next assembly will be this Tuesday and our Concert band will be pewrforming for the first time this year (They will be playing the National Anthem). Don't forget our playground is closed on Tuesday afternoons after assembly.
School Garden
We are going to hold our working bee this Tuesday afternoon from 3:00pm-3:30 pm following assembly. There is A LOT of work to do and anyone that is able to assist can be assured that their assistance is greatly appreciated.
In Term 2, Rob Driese will commence gardening lessons with our students. Rob has spent a number of years as the gardening teacher at Noosa Pengari Stiener School and is very keen to volunteer his time here at Montville. I am very excited to see these gardens evolve and to see our students enjoying spending their time in them and learning about them.
Finally I would like to remind everyone that our first P&C meeting is on this Friday at 3pm and encourage anybody that is interested to come along. Our plan is to be finished by 4pm and we will have staff supervising the students until then. Hope to see you there!
Regards
Adam Montgomery

Student Welfare Corner
A very warm welcome back to all students, families and members of staff for our 2023 school year. My focus this term is to continue developing relationship with the students and school community as well as support students emotionally and socially. I am very honoured to be working as the Student Welfare Worker at Montville State School.
As Student Welfare Worker, I am available to students and parents on Thursdays and Fridays. Students are able to approach me directly with their concerns or through referrals from their parents or teachers.
Students’ access to the Student Welfare Worker is on a voluntary basis and continuing one-to-one support requires parental consent.
If you feel your child requires additional emotional, social and/or educational support, please contact me or speak to your child’s class teacher.
You can contact me through the school office if you wish.

Year 1 Update
Hello from the amazing Year 1 class.
We have been very busy in class over the past two weeks. The children have been reading imaginary texts and responding to them by sharing their ideas with peers in small groups and whole class settings. During maths we have been identifying collections of numbers up to 100 and locating these on number lines, place value, skip counting in 2, 5 and 10’s. The conversations we have been sharing connected to HASS have been interesting and funny.
This week we shared some of our science night observations, the children really enjoyed sharing their findings. The children are getting very good at their morning jobs-checking in, phonics workbook and number activities- it is great to see how proud they are of their work. We are still trying to secure a class representative for our class, if are interested and would like more info please pop in and see me or talk to Mr Montgomery.

Year 3/4 Update
The students in grade 3 are reading Matty Forever in class. They are enjoying reading about the two main characters Matty and Bill. Some of the students have commented about the story.
“I think Matty Forever is a great book because the characters are great. The story is the best. I like Matty’s house and that her family are very creative. They love art. I also love Bill’s enthusiasm for making sure Matty will be he’s friend” “I enjoy Matty Forever as it gives me ideas about how to get more and other friends” “My favourite character is Matty because she is creative and dresses up like a pirate and a fairy” “There are no pictures but the author helps you build a picture in your head”
The grade 4 students have been just as enthusiastic in their reading of The Twits by Roald Dahl. I think it’s the humour and the tricks that have held their interest. We are investigating how the author uses language to make their text more interesting. Some of the students have commented, “I liked how the author uses his imagination to make Mrs Twit stretch on balloons and tie her to the ground, then Mr Twit cuts the rope” “I like that the story is funny and the author uses good descriptive language to make it more interesting”
Both grades are looking forward to continuing their reading to find out what happens next.

In Science the class has been learning about the solar system, with lots of modeling happening! Check out the amazing globes they made last week.
