Montville SS Newsletter Term 4 27 October
From the Desk of the Principal
It has been a really positive start to Term 4 and I am proud to say the students have been following our school expectations of Care for Self, Others and The Environment each and every day. We have a very busy term ahead with excursions, swimming lessons, surf-skills lessons, Arts night, Graduation and Awards afternoon plus many other happenings throughout the term. Please remember that we are very happy to assist financally if it is required to assist in your child participating in these activities.
Today we will all wear red in recognition of the "Day For Daniel" https://danielmorcombe.com.au/day-for-daniel/ . All parents and students are welcome to join in as we walk through Montville. We will meet at the Clock Shop at 8:10 AM and will walk to the school at 8:15 AM. Students are asked to bring a gold coin to be donated to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.
P&C Treasurer and Market Co-ordinator Required
The Williams family will be leaving the Montville State School community at the end of the year as they are relocating to Toowoomba. Gareth has been our P&C treasurer and Kate has been our Market Stall Co-ordinator and we are needing a parent to step in and fill these roles until our next P&C Annual General Meeting in March. I want to sincerely thank Kate and Gareth for all they have done and wish them all of the best with their move. If you are interested in taking on a role or wanting some more information please let me know.
Playground Update
Following a panel tender evaluation a contractor has been selected. The final step is for the decision to be confirmed by the Queensland Government Procurement team. In the next fortnight I will be able to announce the successful contractor that has won the tender to design and construct our new outdoor play and learning area and then will be able to finalise the design of this exciting project. At this stage construction will commence in early January and be completed by March.

Late arrivals /Early Departures
Late arrivals /Early Departures
It is a Education Queensland requirement that any student arriving late to school or leaving early is signed in or out through the office. If your child is getting to class after 9am they must sign in through the office. If they are leaving before the bell at 2.45pm they must be signed out through the office. Teachers cannot sign students in or out.
If students are being collected early they must be signed out by a person listed as an emergency contact on their school profile unless the school has been notified in writing of a casual person who may be picking them up. This can be by email or text.
By prior arrangement students can be waiting in the office to be collected. Students are not permitted to wait at the butterfly to be collected early, we have a duty of care to primary school students to make sure they are collected by an authorised person.
If you have an appointment to get to please allow enough time to attend the office and sign students out.
We will do our best to make the process as quick as possible.
Thank you for your support with this very important safety policy.
Coop News
We have loved bringing chickens back to the Montville Coop after a short absence this year. The new girls are doing a fantastic job of settling in and making themselves at home. There are four ISA brown chickens who hatched in April 2023, they are now regular layers and each morning there are 3-4 eggs that we box up, ready for use in the SAKG lessons with Miss Agarta and even in the year 1 classroom as part of their classwork on procedural text. Mr Montgomery benefitted from an egg sandwich that day!
Archie and Willow were put in charge of naming the young birds and they settled on a Pokemon theme! Each of the chickens has a coloured leg band to help tell them apart. The chicken with the yellow band is called Pickachu, the green band belongs to Bulbasaur, the red band belongs to Charmander and the blue banded chicken is called Glaceon. Archie says ‘Pickachu is my favourite but Charmander is funny because she pecks you all the time to see what you taste like. I fetch lettuce and chick weed for them to gobble up.’ Willow adds that Glaceon is the darkest chicken to look at and Pickachu is the lightest in colour. Glaceon is Willow’s favourite as she lets her pick her up for cuddles.
Each day the chickens spend time in their run looking for food, enjoying a few greens from the garden, spreading their mulch everywhere and dust bathing in the soil. At the end of the school day we open their gate to allow them to free range the school grounds. Mr Montgomery kindly put a new automatic door on their coop before they moved in. So, at sunset, they all head home to their roosting bar and the door locks shut behind them at nightfall to keep them safe from predators.
The Montville Four are extremely friendly and have been known to wander into the village when they are allowed out to free range. So far, they have been spotted by the village hall, the bus stop and on the green. Hopefully they will soon learn that the grass is actually greenest where Mr Pete waters it and it’s just not worth wandering too far from home.
To keep them happy and entertained during the day we try to make sure they have access to fresh greens. You might have noticed an O-ball hanging in their run. Each morning we fill this with delicious fresh greens from the garden and they empty it very quickly. The greenhouse next door to the chicken run is also getting a workout. We have sown several seed trays of veg and grass to keep the chickens fed and happy over the weeks to come. We’re hoping a few seedlings will avoid being eaten and will make it into pots to sell at the Montville Markets to help raise funds for the P&C.

Prep Update
It has been a positive start to our last term of Prep. We are learning to understand the differences between narrative and informative texts and exploring how to write letters. We are again working with number in maths with skip counting and rainbow facts. The swimming program has been well received, especially on the hot days and next week we are back in the garden. Also coming up is our excursion to the ‘Pevan and Sarah’ concert. The students are very excited for this event.
Year 1 Update
The start to term 4 has started off at full speed.
The kids have been reading, planning and writing procedure texts. We have then put them on the iPad using Book Creator.
During Maths the kids have been working with halves, numbers up to 100 and MONEY! We will be working with $$ until the end of the year. The children have been spending their event $ in our class shop every Friday. If you have any items you could donate to our shop, please drop them into the classroom.
Swimming has been great with the warm weather and the kids have enjoyed cooking off in the water on Mondays.
Not long until the end of the year. Let's do this together.
Miss Sheree
Year 2 Update
In year two the students have been writing, asking and answering questions in our 'Beat the Buzzer' game. They have been coming up with lots of different questions from general knowledge to anything they have learnt this year so far in English, Math, Science HASS, or even technology.
We were lucky enough to have had a lot of ownership over our Kitchen session last week too.
The students wrote and followed their own recipes they wrote. It was fabulously delicious.
Thank you again to Miss Agarta and the parents and helper. We appreciate it greatly.
Year 3/4 Update
Week four and we are busy preparing for our English, Math and HASS assessments.
It's so nice to see students enjoying the outdoors too. Bike club last week was a lot of fun and the disco is always a hit with students from our class.
I am so pleased and proud to say that many of our class 'scooped the pool' at parade with Good one rewards this week. We are a very kind class and I am so happy that we are continuing to support each other in and out of the classroom.
Well done 3/4!
Mrs Clarke
Year 5/6 Update
5/6 have hit the ground running! We have been busy completing our final English and Math assessments for this year.
We have been enjoying swimming lesson and are excited to start surf skills in a couple of weeks.
We have been working hard to prepare for the end of the year, creating the digital yearbook for the 6s and planning for the graduation dinner.
We are looking forward to our excursion to Sea Life in a few weeks, early in the year our class won free tickets with Under the Pump.
Kitchen Garden
YEAR 5/6
We drew some maps of the kitchen garden with Year 5/6.
We measured out the length and width of the area and we also measured the size of the garden beds.
This is helpful for knowing how much garden space we have for growing plants!
YEAR 1
Year 1 made "compost cauldrons". We used greens and browns and mixed with our magic wands!
YEAR 2
The Year 2s collected some beautiful flowers from the garden. We pressed some so we can use them later!
