Montville News - Week 4 Term 3 2024 - Issue 22
From The Desk of the Principal
Welcome to another edition of the Montville State School Newsletter. I am thrilled to able to report that the playground continues to develop with the students now able to enjoy the reading pods, amphitheatre and now the lower section of the playground including the sandpit and swing. I have been really impressed with the students and the way they have been able to use this area responsibly and cooperatively. We all are looking forward to the playground being completed and allowing our students to learn and play in an exciting and engaging environment.
Our students will be able to contribute to making our outdoor environments even more appealing by participating in our Tree Planting Day on Thursday 29 August. All of the students will plant one tree each around our new playground area on the day and I am hoping that following this we will be able to open our completed playground area. (All of our fingers are crossed !!)
On Friday we held our first Prep Open Day for the year and welcomed 7 new families into our school to take a tour. If you know of any families that may be interested in their child attending Montville State School next year or if your child will not be returning in 2025 then please contact the office on 54521333.
Over the holidays our P&C grants team were successful in obtaining $3200 to go towards the extension of our kitchen garden with the purchase of 6 wicking beds which will be placed between the music room and the current kitchen garden. These beds are able to be watered every couple of weeks which makes them ideal for looking after the plants over the holidays.
I am also very pleased to announce that we were successful in "Pick of the Crop Grant application. We will use this grant to provide to our kitchen garden program to encourage students to learn about, see, taste and try veggies and fruit during the school day. We were successful in securing $5000 from Health and Wellbeing Queensland to help us achieve our goals, and we encourage everyone to help our students become veggie kids!
Whole school healthy eating initiative has been running since 2020 and we are so keen to be involved as it links the students teaching and learning in the classroom with activities across the whole school. Most of us know that kids (and us!) are not eating enough veggies and fruit every day and by increasing our intake by even one extra serve, we can all gain benefits to our health in the long term.

Prep/1
It's been a big couple of weeks for our Prep/Yr 1 ROCK STARS who have demonstrated nothing but resilience in the face of many changes.
Our Preps are on FIRE in Maths tackling everything in relation to counting and recognising the numbers from 0-20, including counting forwards and backwards, making connections between names and numerals and ordering small collections.
The Year 1's are just as busy, working hard on their AMAZING reading, writing and oral presentation skills as we begin learning how to write and present a recount of a step-by-step procedure. We had lots of fun working with our buddies when we got to tell them how to make or do something we were interested in.
PARENTS PLEASE NOTE:
- Library borrowing will now be on Thursday afternoons instead of Fridays.
- To support and build the oral presentation skills needed for this terms English unit, a Show and Tell roster will be coming home shortly. Please help by reminding your child to bring their item on their set day.
Whilst we are all thinking of Miss Sheree and eagerly awaiting her return, we know the show must go on, so we are digging into Term 3 with focus and determination.
Mrs Poingdestre, Mrs Lancaster and Mr Jake
Year 2/3
We have settled very quickly into Term 3 with lots of new discoveries, engaging class discussions and active listening. It’s fantastic to see everyone engaged and committed to trying their best!
Students have been honing their skills in writing and delivering persuasive presentations. Regular games of ‘Would You Rather’ has been a great way to build this understanding and confidence in forming a point of view.
In Maths, students have been working on identifying different shapes, understanding how angles work, and exploring the properties of geometric figures. Through hands-on activities and practical examples, they’ve been able to visualize and apply these concepts in creative ways.
We’ve been exploring different geographic regions and learning about their unique features and environments in HASS and in science we have focused on the concept of forces and movement.
During our Friday art lessons, we have been exploring the colour pallet and have commenced some lovely pieces, allowing our own individuality to be expressed.
It’s going to be a great Term!
Many Thanks, Mrs McKinnon
Year 3/4
Over the last few weeks all students have been so excited by sections of our amazing playground being opened up for use. We are enjoying a new eating area, alphabet stepping blocks, swing and the sandpit, soon to be followed by more.
We have also been going over learnt topics and writing quiz questions to check each other’s learning in our ‘Beat the Buzzer game’.
After break times we have been focusing on mindful reading. Students have loved borrowing graphic novels and novellas from Ms Kelly in the library.
Miss Baker
Yr 5/6
We have an action-packed Term 3 underway. Our Kids in Action (KIA) Team visited some local National Parks and enjoyed filming the amazing birds and scenery we saw. Thank you to Mr Anderson and Ms O'Connol for their invaluable insight into these locations and helping us with this project.
We have been following all the Olympic news, watching our Aussies win gold and practicing our filming and speaking skills while creating good luck messages for the athletes. We even held our own potato Olympics.
Our vlogs are underway, and all students are very engaged and keen to share their vlogs with families at the end of term.

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden.
Prep and Year 1 harvested lots of Bok choi, leeks, radish, zucchini and lettuce for the kitchen. P/1 class will be in in the kitchen on Friday - making rice paper rolls, sushi, pizza and chocolate brownies. We also admired our flowering plantings around the mulberry tree.
