Montville News - Week 4 Term 4 2024 - Issue 24
From The Desk of the Principal
Term 4 is well and truly underway and it has been wonderful to see the students in class and out in the playground following our behaviour expectations of Care for Self, Others and The Environment.
This is the first newsletter since the completion of our play and learning area and I am so proud of the final result. It certainly was exciting to see the school captains cut the ribbon and the students finally getting the chance to play on all the new equipment. I want to sincerely thank Woodfired for all of the free pizza that fed the crowd and acknowledge the Montville P&C for the $100,000 grant that they successfully applied for in 2022 that got this process going and enabled us to have the fantastic space that we have today.
Staff Appreciation Day
This Friday is World Teachers Day. On this day we acknowledge all of the staff, teaching and non-teaching, for their hard work here at Montville State School. Working in a small school is very rewarding but is extremely busy and staff are continually asked to go "above and beyond" so that our students have opportunities that allow our students to learn in a fun and exciting way. On behalf of the students - THANK YOU!
Day for Daniel
This Friday is also the Day for Daniel. Our students are asked to wear red and bring a donation that will go to the Daniel Morcombe foundation. We are also going to be holding our own Walk for Daniel and will meet at the Clock Shop at 8:10 on Friday morning and will all walk together back to school.
Revised MSS Student Code of Conduct
Last Friday, The P&C endorsed the revised Student Code of Conduct which; outlines acceptable behaviours by students, teachers, and school administrators, provides guidelines for disciplinary action and creates a safe and respectful learning environment for all community members. A large part of our revised approach is Restorative Practice which teaches all members of the school community: Accountability, Responsibility & Empathy. I look forward to sharing this with the school community and seeing all of our school community demonstrating " On TRACK "( Thoughtful, Respectful, Accountable, Kind) behaviour.
Prep/1
The P/1 classroom has been a hub of activity over the last few weeks. Our busy little team has been loving all opportunities to learn and play in the new playground and thoroughly enjoying this term's fine motor, Creation Stations.
With the Learn to Swim program underway, an upcoming excursion to see Pevan and Sarah in concert and so many more activities on the calendar, Term 4 is shaping up to be super busy and super fun.
Families, if you get the chance, come take a look at your child's Jack and the Beanstalk mobile retell. They look amazing!
Mrs Lancaster and Mr Jake
Year 2/3
This term, our Year 2/3 students have been diving into exciting and engaging lessons that also acknowledge Indigenous perspectives. We have been reading numerous Indigenous and Dreaming stories and also exploring how our Indigenous peoples used materials in the natural environment.
In maths, we have been having a blast exploring fractions. Students have been learning to recognise and create fractions using everyday objects. They’ve enjoyed hands-on activities where they shared items with their classmates, discovering how fractions can represent parts of a whole. We’ve also introduced the learning concept of money. Students have practiced counting coins and understanding the value of different denominations. We are looking forward to lots of fun role-play scenarios using the shop in our playground.
In our design technologies sessions, students have been challenged to create models using various materials. They’ve learned about the properties of these materials such as strength, hardness, elasticity and absorbency —while working collaboratively in teams. This hands-on approach not only fosters creativity but also develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills, key components of STEM learning.
We are so proud of our students’ enthusiasm and creativity, and we look forward to more fun and learning in the coming weeks!
Many Thanks,
Many Thanks, Mrs McKinnon & Miss Kaitlyn
Year 3/4
Currently in the 3 / 4 class we have been diving into money! We have looked at different currency used around the world and adding and subtracting, calculating change and looking at ordering coins and notes in ascending and descending order.
The wonderful Ms Kelly has been playing many money games with the students during our Maths Rotations time. Stamping stamps, rolling dice and buying goods from the Book Club magazine.
The lovely Miss Leeann has been helping us break down the Rowan of Rin novel, and deep dive into the adventure/quest.
Very proud of the character and setting descriptions these guys have been writing. Keep up the great work year 3 and 4!
Miss Baker
Yr 5/6
The 5/6s have hit the ground running. We have a very busy term ahead. We have already been to the movies to watch The Wild Robot for English and had a visit from the Sunshine Coast Council to prep us for our beach clean up day. We are off to visit Burnside State High this week for an experience day and have been busy completing math assessments in class and preparing for our end of term market stalls.

In Term 3, 2 students from Montville SS ventured to the University of Sunshine Coast on a Sunday for the annual Sunshine Coast Languages Speech Contest. This contest attracts hundreds of competitors from Year 5-12 across multiple languages. Jack Logan (Year 5) and Jessica Fitzgerald (Year 6) prepared and presented a speech in Japanese. After their speeches, they were required to answer questions from the judges, entirely in Japanese. Both students did so well with their speeches and answering of questions in Japanese and showed great commitment, practicing their speeches diligently in the lead up to the competition. Our students were in some of the biggest divisions with approx. 15 students in each of the Year 5 and 6 Japanese divisions. Jack received a Highly Commended Certificate in the Year 5 division. Jessica achieved 1st place gold medal in Year 6 division.
