Principal Update

Dear Montville State School Community,
As we reach the midpoint of Term 2, I am filled with pride reflecting on the vibrant and enriching experiences our students have embraced so far.
Maranatha Camp: Fostering Teamwork and Leadership
Our recent camp at Maranatha was a resounding success. Students engaged in activities that challenged them to collaborate, lead, and support one another, strengthening their resilience and camaraderie. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to our dedicated staff—Mr. Pete, Ms. Free, Ms. Kelly and Mrs. Deans—whose commitment ensured a safe and rewarding experience for all.
Celebrating Our Mothers and Carers
Our Mother's Day event was a delightful occasion, bringing together parents, carers, and students in a celebration of appreciation and community spirit. It was heartwarming to witness the joy and connection shared among families.
Recognition from Our School Supervisor
We were honoured to host our school supervisor last term, who commended the exceptional curriculum delivery, innovative teaching practices, and high levels of student engagement at Montville SS. They have encouraged us to share our successful strategies with neighbouring schools, a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and students.

Prep/1

Hello, Prep and Yr 1 Families,
The Prep and Year 1's have been super busy this Term. We have been investigating Informational Texts and writing about the facts to share with our peers. During Word Study Year 1's have been doing dictation. spelling and writing sentences along with developing our reading. Preps have been working just as hard on their reading, decoding/spelling and writing sentences. It is a pleasure to hand out the Word Study Superstar capes each day to the students who work super hard during these sessions. Maths has been fun; Year 1's working with numbers and partitioning them into 10's and 1's, Part-Part-Whole and solving number stories. Preps have been exploring numbers up to 20 and how they can be represented different ways. During Science we have been looking at animals- Living Things and their habitat. Some of our students have a LOT of knowledge on this and they are loving sharing their ideas with their class. HPE lessons have been practicing our athletics events getting ready for our athletics day later in the Term. We will also be practicing these during our PMP sessions; the Prep/1's will look like experts by athletics day ;-) Mothers Day was a hit and the students were super excited to spoil our mums at our Mothers Day Pamper Afternoon. And pampered they were!! We hope all our mums had a wonderful Mothers Day. Thank you to our parents who support our class Literacy Groups during the week. We love having you in our room and value your support.

U8's Day - next Friday 23rd May

Year 2/3

Writing Non-Fiction Texts
In English we are focusing on writing non-fiction texts. So far, we have learned that all non-fiction texts have features that we must include. We need:
- Titles
- Subtitles (Features, Diet, Habitat, and other interesting information)
- Information that informs our audience about facts that fit within each subtitle (written in paragraphs for year 3)
- Diagrams and pictures with informative labels
We started with a book all about us. After all, we are experts on ourselves and that allowed us to focus on structure and language features before the hard work of using researched information on a new topic. Here is some of our work so far.
Next, we will learn from the feedback about our books, apply that feedback and what we know about the features of non-fiction text to a new writing task. We will use information we are learning in our reading groups for our next non-fiction text.
Miss Glenna

Year 3/4

As Term 2 unfolds we are excited to share with you the wonderful learning adventures we have been experiencing in class.
We are thrilled to share that we had an unforgettable adventure at camp! From exploring the great outdoors to building strong friendships, every moment was filled with excitement and discovery. We embraced all activities with enthusiasm. The laughter, curiosity, and resilience truly made the camp experience extraordinary. Thank you for trusting us with this opportunity to create lasting memories.
At the beginning of the term, students visited our Kitchen Garden with Dr. Sophie and gained valuable insights into gardening.
Students have been busy expanding their knowledge across various subjects! In English, they’ve been diving into informative texts, learning how to identify key features and create their own fact-filled writing pieces.
In Maths, the focus has been on mastering times tables and applying mathematical modelling to solve real-world problems, fostering critical thinking and numeracy skills.
In Science, students are exploring the fascinating differences between living and non-living things, engaging in hands-on activities to classify and understand the characteristics of each. It’s been an exciting times full of discovery and growth!
Mrs Deans

Yr 5/6

Term 2 has been full of highlights and positive learning in Year 5/6! Camp was definitely a standout, with students showing great teamwork and enthusiasm. We’ve also loved having Miss Howard, our Prac student join us this term, she has been teaching us about animal adaptations in science. In English, we’re enjoying writing biographies on famous people of our choice. We can’t forget our time in the garden and kitchen program, it was a blast, working together and making some yummy foods!
The class is working hard, making great progress, and bringing a positive attitude to everything we do. We’re so proud of them!
Miss Free

みなさん、こんにちは。
トントントン. On Thursday 15th May, Montville students got to feel the beat with a traditional Japanese たいこTaiko (drumming) incursion. Kiyomi Sensei from EZ Tyke-Oh taught students about the customs and culture associated with Taiko, while giving students an opportunity to participate and play on different sized Taiko, using proper Japanese techniques. It was a lovely merging of Japanese language, culture and music.
Whilst we head into Winter, Japan is enjoying Spring. During Spring in Japan, a very important festival takes place… こどものひ。Montville Prep-Year 4 students learned about this important festival, feeling slightly envious that they don’t have one like this in Australia. They learned about the symbols of the こい and かぶと and how these symbolise strength and good health. Families hope for their children to grow to be strong and healthy on this day. Students in Year 2 and 3 created origami こい. Students in Prep and Year 1 and 6 created their ownこい flags to celebrate the festival.
Below are pictures of students at the Taiko incursion and in Japanese classes this term.

National Road Safety Week

Sergeant Sherryn Klump from the Road Policing Unit in Nambour visited on Tuesday to speak to students about road safety. She spoke to Preps to year 4 about how to be safe in cars and out about near roads. With years 5 and 6 Sergeant Sherryn focused on laws and responsibilities with the use of e-scooters and e-bikes, and how to be smart with using a mobile phone around roads. Sergeant Sherryn was very impressed with some of the excellent questions students asked, and the very high behaviour standards she saw our students exhibiting.

Pick of the Crop Update
Our school has been successful for a grant from Pick of the Crop, an initiative of Health and Wellbeing QLD operating in 250 state primary schools. Pick of the Crop schools provide opportunities for students to enjoy more fruits and vegetables.
This grant helps us to grow, prepare and eat fruits and veggies, and fosters connections with growers and other professionals. The initiative also provides access to curriculum-aligned teaching resources and programs. Helpers are always appreciated – in the garden, or whichever skills you can bring.
Please support this effort beyond the school gate by enabling healthy eating habits at home. You can start by getting the kids involved in preparing nutritious lunchbox treats like the Green Savoury Pikelets recipe here. For other info, tips and recipes visit www.hw.qld.gov.au/pick-of-the-crop/

Administration of medications in schools
1.1 ‘As-needed’ medication
Prescribing health practitioners (e.g. doctor, dentist, optometrist, nurse practitioner) may prescribe medication to students that is to be administered ‘as needed’ or ‘as required’ in response to certain symptoms.
A pharmacy label on the student’s prescribed medication indicating it is to be given ‘as needed’ does not provide sufficient information for school staff to safely administer it, as they are not qualified to make clinical decisions about when medication is required.
What this means for you as a parent - any medications prescribed or over the counter medication which is to be administered at school requires a DR's letter or has been prescribed by a Dr before a staff member can give this medication to your child. This includes panadol, anti-histamines, etc.
Schools require specific medical authorisation to administer any medication to students except when it is an emergency first aid response to anaphylaxis or asthma.
This medical authorisation may take the form of:
- the medication (in its original packaging) with a completed current pharmacy label (that indicates that it is prescribed medication), and/or
- other written authorisation signed by the prescribing health practitioner.
Is your family eligible for free internet access?
