Principal Update

Wrapping up Term 3, 2025
Dear Montville State School Community,
As we near the end of Term 3, I want to take a moment to express just how proud I am of our students, staff, and families. This term has been filled with learning, celebration, and community spirit. It is an honour to be part of such a vibrant and caring school community.
Celebrating Book Week
Thank you to everyone who contributed to making Book Week such a memorable celebration. Our Book Parade was a true highlight, with students and staff alike showcasing incredible creativity, colour, and character. It was a joy to see our love of reading so clearly on display. Montville SS continues to nurture strong readers, and Book Week gave us the chance to celebrate that together.
Daily Rapid Reading Volunteers
A big thank you to our Daily Rapid Reading (DRR) volunteers. Your support each week has helped grow student confidence, fluency, and a love for reading. The commitment you show to helping our young readers flourish is truly appreciated.
I'd like to personally thank Eric, John, Rosemary L, Nancy, Lenore, Rosemary C, Sue, Barbie, Laura, Jane, Chris, Suzanne, and of course, Cath Kelly, who has been organising the rosters and supporting our wonderful volunteers week in and week out. You are what helps make our community so great, thank you!
Father’s Day Celebrations
Our Father’s Day celebrations were a great success! A big thank you to Jenna Brown for organising a fabulous gift stall that gave students the opportunity to pick something special for their dads. As a father of three myself, I know how meaningful those gifts can be.
In addition to the stall, a heartwarming “Donuts for Dads” morning was held in Prep/1. Thank you to Sheree for leading this lovely event and helping our Dads' feel seen and appreciated. The smiles on the students’ and Dads’ faces said it all!
Thank You to Our P&C
A heartfelt thank you to our P&C for their ongoing support and generosity this term. From fundraising efforts to event support and beyond, your contributions make a real difference for our students and staff. We deeply value your dedication to our school community.
Our next P&C meeting will include a discussion about our Student Resource Scheme (SRS). If you’re interested in learning more or contributing ideas, we encourage you to attend. For more information, visit:

Sporting Highlights – Oztag & Hockey
This term, our students in Years 3–6 have participated in a range of exciting sporting events.
On Friday 12th September, students will represent Montville SS at the Small Schools Oztag Gala Day at the Mooloolah Soccer Grounds. This day promises lots of energy, teamwork, and great sportsmanship.
We’re also thrilled to be sending three teams to the Ballinger Cup Hockey Carnival on Wednesday 17th September. Students were introduced to hockey during HPE lessons thanks to a visiting coach from the Sunshine Coast Hockey Association. Miss Free has been instrumental in bringing this opportunity to life and supporting students in preparation.
Looking Ahead
The last day of term will be Friday 19th September. Thank you again for your continued support and partnership throughout Term 3.
Wishing you a safe and restful holiday break when the time comes. We look forward to another fantastic term ahead.
Warm regards,
Iljas Memedovski
Principal, Montville State School
Prep/1

Congratulations to all the prep/yr1 students! Almost the end of Term 3 and we have all survived.
The kids have been busy completing Term assessment along with new learning across all learning areas.
Book Week was a massive success, seeing everyone dress up for the day was wonderful.
We had our first cooking lesson for the year, and I am happy to say everyone still has their fingers. The food that was cooked was delicious and we loved having so many parents come and help.
Bike day was a hit, seeing so many smiles on the kids' faces was very rewarding. We have some speedy bike rides in our class. Lucky there wasn't any speed cameras on the day!
Father's Day celebrations were a lot of fun, we hope our fathers and grandads had an enjoyable afternoon on the oval and the hall.
As the Teem wraps up we look forward to engaging with parents at our parent/teacher chats.
Miss Sheree, Mr Jake & Miss Beth

Year 2/3

That’s not right, that’s not okay …!
Over the last few weeks, we’ve been targeting playground “talk” in our classroom focus on positive behaviour. We have talked about 2 key concepts:
First, we should T.H.I.N.K before we speak. Are our words:

It’s important that we can be sure that we are engaging in positive talk with others, and especially not participating in conversations that are contributing to playground gossip. So, if we do hear students talking in a way that shows they aren’t T.H.I.N.K.ing first, what do we do? We can simply say:

(Lyrics by Adeline and Skye. Accompanying dance choreography by Skye.)
Over the next week, we’ll be putting up some colourful reminders to T.H.I.N.K before we speak, and to walk away when others are engaging in conversations that are not okay.
Miss Glenna
Year 3/4

Beautiful 3/4 have been very busy in the classroom.
In English, we have been focusing on persuasive texts, learning how to share our opinions with strong reasons and evidence. The students have been working hard on their persuasive assessment pieces, confidently expressing their ideas.
In Mathematics, our learning is centring around measurement, where we are exploring length, mass, capacity, temperature, perimeter and area. Students enjoy hands-on activities, comparing and estimating measurements in real-life contexts.
Our Science lessons have been full of curiosity and discovery. We conducted experiments to observe what happens when different items are left out in the sun. The students watched ice, chocolate, and butter melt, and then worked collaboratively to design and create shades using craft and natural materials. This helped us test whether providing shade changes how quickly things melt.
This term we also enjoyed some wonderful time in the kitchen garden and cooking program. The students loved cooking together, following recipes, and, of course, tasting their delicious creations!
Throughout all our learning, Beautiful 3/4 have shown persistence, teamwork, and respect. We are so proud of how the students have collaborated, problem-solved, and supported each other this term.

Yr 5/6

Term 3 has been a busy and exciting one for 5/6! In English, we have been working hard on persuasive writing, putting our skills to the test as we tried to convince Mr Memedovski on a range of school and community topics. In Maths, we explored lots of new concepts, including shapes, measurement, and angles. Science has been full of hands-on experiments with light, sparking some big discussions about colours that left many students absolutely mind-blown! Along the way, we’ve also enjoyed special events such as Book Week, gardening, cooking, buddies, hockey, and Bike Day. It’s been a fantastic term, and the students have been incredible—we can’t wait to see what our final term of the year brings!

What is Reading Fluency?
Reading fluency is the ability to read quickly, accurately, and with expression. Average correct word rates are:
· End of Year 1: ~60 words per minute
· End of Year 2: ~90–100 words per minute
· Years 3–6: ~100–120 words per minute (with <3 errors)
· Skilled adults: ~180 words per minute
---
What Affects Fluency?
· Fluency and comprehension are closely linked.
· Students need to decode and understand words at the same time.
· If decoding is slow, comprehension suffers.
---
How to Improve Fluency
· Read often and for longer periods.
· Read aloud to an adult.
· Get immediate corrective feedback.
· Use evidence-based, level-appropriate books.
---
Why Feedback Matters
· Feedback helps students learn from errors straight away.
· Research shows repeated reading with feedback builds fluency more effectively than reading alone.
· Too many mistakes mean the text is too hard.

LOTE

On Sunday 28th August, Jack Logan and Georgia Fitzgerald represented Montville at the Annual Sunshine Coast Languages Speech Contest at the University of Sunshine Coast.
At this year’s contest, 445 students from schools across the Sunshine Coast participated in the competition. As part of the competition, Jack and Georgia had to complete a set Japanese speech, learn and memorise their speech, then present this to 3 judges who asked them questions about what they had said, entirely in Japanese. Georgia and Jack put a lot of time and effort into preparing in the month leading up to the contest.
This year, in the primary Japanese divisions alone, there were 26 schools represented and over 120 students. Congratulations to Georgia for representing Montville in the Year 5 Japanese division and achieving 1st place in that division. Congratulations to Jack for representing Montville in the Year 6 Japanese division.
We are very proud of these students for their courage, pushing themselves outside of their comfort zone and their excellent speeches and delivery, both representing Montville with pride.
